Pete Dye's characteristic style has had considerable impact on contemporary golf course architecture. Dye, the consummate hands-on builder, is known as an artist and a genius in golf course construction and design. Always concerned with environmental and natural area protection and enhancement, Dye has been known to walk the site and explain the course design to permit board inspectors. While Dye's work may be occasionally controversial, no one has done more to transform the face of contemporary golf course design.
Dye, a good golfer, took his golfing knowledge and put it to work in golf course design. His wife, Alice, a state and national golfing title winner for decades, assisted him in the drafting work. In 1963, after a month-long tour of classical Scottish venues, Dye's designs took on a boldness and starkness in design. He used strategic planning in order to not partake in what other modern designers were doing.
Dye courses are built with finesse in mind. While many designers prefer to lay courses out within the land, Dye adds in contrast and angles of interest. From tight, intimate layouts to vast peripheral waste areas and flat, level greens, Dye courses always add the extra element to a golfer's game.
Among Dye's many award-winning courses include Crooked Stick in Carmel, Ind., Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island, The TPC at Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra,Long Cove on Hilton Head Island, Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tennessee, and the Ocean Course on Kiawah Island. The Dye Course at Barefoot Resort is undoubtedly another jewel in his long list of accomplishments.
