The Dye Course named 2013
‘Golf Course of the Year’
At Barefoot Resort, Pete Dye set out to create something that would linger in the golfer’s mind forever.
Bordering the natural white sands of the Carolina Bays, this visually stunning design is filled with the infamous pitfalls for wayward shots that have become synonymous with the Dye name. Both beautiful and treacherous, the Dye Course is an experience you won’t soon forget. The Dye Course is the only semi-private facility at Barefoot Resort.
Pete Dye upholds his reputation of building memorable and challenging golf courses by creating a stunning design filled with his infamous pitfalls to capture errant shots. However, if played from the appropriate set of tees, players of all abilities will be able to navigate the Dye Course. The course is a Par 72, 7,343-yard layout within a gated community on exclusive real only on the exterior perimeter of the property.Pete Dye is famous for his use of native grasses. The fairways are GN-1 Bermuda grass, a hybrid developed by Greg Norman Turf. The approaches are Tifdwarf Bermudagrass, the greens are newly acquired Champion UltraDwarf and the dramatic visual effects are achieved by the Centipede and Zoysia grass roughs.
Marketed exclusively through Barefoot Realty is The DYE Estates, a private gated community surrounding the Dye Course. Beautifully wooded homesites will line Pete Dye’s latest masterpiece as well as the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. Stately 1/2 acre homesites begin in the low $200’s while massive 3/4 acre waterway homesites begin in the mid $700’s.

Pete Dye’s characteristic style has had considerable impact on contemporary golf course architecture. Dye, the consummate hands-on builder, is known as an artist and a genius in golf course construction and design. Always concerned with environmental and natural area protection and enhancement, Dye has been known to walk the site and explain the course design to permit board inspectors. While Dye’s work may be occasionally controversial, no one has done more to transform the face of contemporary golf course design.
Dye, a good golfer, took his golfing knowledge and put it to work in golf course design. His wife, Alice, a state and national golfing title winner for decades, assisted him in the drafting work. In 1963, after a month-long tour of classical Scottish venues, Dye’s designs took on a boldness and starkness in design. He used strategic planning in order to not partake in what other modern designers were doing.
Dye courses are built with finesse in mind. While many designers prefer to lay courses out within the land, Dye adds in contrast and angles of interest. From tight, intimate layouts to vast peripheral waste areas and flat, level greens, Dye courses always add the extra element to a golfer’s game.
Among Dye’s many award-winning courses include Crooked Stick in Carmel, Ind., Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island, The TPC at Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra, Long Cove on Hilton Head Island, Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tennessee, and the Ocean Course on Kiawah Island. The Dye Course at Barefoot Resort is undoubtedly another jewel in his long list of accomplishments.
