Since 2011, Barefoot underwent a two year green renovation which replaced the old Bentgrass with our new Champion UltraDwarf Bermuda grass.

No other grass has a growth pattern quite like Champion UltraDwarf Bermudagrass. Even among the UltraDwarf varieties, no other grass generates the incredible ball roll of a well maintained Champion Dwarf green. Stimp meter tests have proven that Champion Dwarf greens roll at speeds of nearly two feet faster than other UltraDwarf varieties.

Since their inception they have been received with rave reviews from both our members and guests alike. With the change in grasses it poses a new challenge to the golfers who play any of our four championship golf courses. The new UltraDwarf greens lend themselves to firmer and faster putting surfaces. With the majority of our clientele hailing from the northeast, who is accustomed to Bentgrass, changes in their approach are a must.

Unlike Bentgrass greens where you can get the ball to “stop on a dime”, factoring the roll out is a must. More times than not, our new greens will not even leave a pitch mark due to the firmness of the green complexes. A good rule of thumb is to choose a club that will travel roughly a half club less than normal which will allow the ball to release towards the hole.

With keeping this in mind it is imperative you leave yourself with plenty of green to work with and to avoid the dreaded “short-side.” Should you leave yourself with little or no green to work with, take your medicine a play to the fat part of the green leaving you with an uphill putt if at all possible. The last thing you want to do is to get too “cute” and compound your mistakes.

With the greens being so fast and firm, a premium is placed on speed. It has been said by both our members and golf professionals that play the greens on a regular basis, they take some getting used to. You will soon find out (hopefully sooner rather than later) that putts will roll out. It is necessary to keep the ball below the hole if at all possible. If you do however find yourself above the hole, proceed with extreme caution.

While in town if you’re looking to hone your skills, head on over to our 30 acre lighted driving range. A short game area will allow you to hit a variety of short game shots to fine tune your game to the firmness of the new greens. Once you become a “mastery” of the short game and approach shots you can head over to our practice putting green located right in front of Putters Pub, our on-site sports bar. I get it chicks dig the long ball but at the end of the day “You drive for show and putt for dough!”
